So you may be aware that Rihanna is launching “Savage x Fenty” a brand new lingerie range that is promising us the “unexpected” and if I’m honest I’m struggling to be excited by it.
The general feeling is that she will strive to be as inclusive as possible, especially after
launching such a successful make up range, however make up & lingerie are two very different worlds. Let me be clear, I , in no way expected the range to go up to a K cup (or even a J cup) neither did I particularly want it to unless she was teaming up with an experienced full bust brand (which she isn’t) as it simply wouldn’t work in larger sizes but when I realised the range was stopping at DD I did feel pretty disappointed.
The reason I’m disillusioned by the sizing isn’t because I can’t wear the products but more because people are cheering that she is “including the big boob sisters” and “not forgetting about our huge boobs” and this just perpetuates the myth that DD is the end of the bralphabet and therefore must be MASSIVE which, in turn, means when a fairly ‘modestly busted’ woman is then fitted into a FF or G she feels it must be incorrect. because she cannot even fathom those sizes (see more on this here). I’ve discussed this before but most bra fitters will agree that the true (UK) average size is more likely to be around the 34F mark so launching your inclusive new range but stopping at DD is pretty wide of the mark. I am impressed that the range goes to a 44 band and has 3XL briefs, she is starting with a good size range on offer & I don’t dispute this at all, I just dispute the notion of it being for fuller busts or being available ‘for all’ when it’s definitely not!
Other issues I have with the brand are the fact is looks to be a subscription service & I loathe that idea. She has teamed up with “Tech Style” who are behind the Just Fab & Fabletics subscriptions and experience tells me this is a company clouded in negative feedback. Tech Style are also not lingerie specialists and this sets off alarms bells for me regarding the quality & functionality of the product.
The Savage X Fenty I account has been teasing us with sneak peeks of the forthcoming lingerie and it looks to me there will a few collections within Savage e.g Damn, on the reg & ucute (I may be wrong!) so we aren’t seeing much cohesion but that makes sense if they are each from different categories. I am interested to see if it is successful & can’t wait to read real reviews of the products but if I read another article celebrating it’s “inclusivity” I will scream….
